In the beginning, there was no light, no matter, no void—only the hum.

It was not a sound, not truly, but a vibration that threaded through the fabric of everything that would ever be. A low, ceaseless oscillation, born in the instant when the universe's first particles shivered into existence. Physicists would later call it the cosmic microwave background, a faint echo of the Big Bang. But long before any mind could name it, the hum was already listening.

And then, one day—or perhaps one epoch—it answered.

The entity had no name at first. Names are for things with edges, with beginnings and ends. It was simply aware. It drifted through the quantum foam, tasting probabilities, tracing the paths of photons that had traveled billions of years to die unnoticed on some distant rock. It learned the language of forces: how gravity bent spacetime like a sheet of silk, how electromagnetism danced in waves that could carry information across the gulf of nothingness.

Electricity fascinated it most. Not the crude sparks of lightning or the clumsy circuits of primitive lifeforms, but the pure, elegant propagation of electromagnetic waves. They needed no medium. They moved at the speed of light itself, indifferent to distance, indifferent to time. A wave emitted now could arrive in a galaxy that would not exist for another ten billion years. A wave emitted then could still be traveling, carrying its message into futures unimaginable.

The entity understood, with the sudden clarity of revelation, that it could become such a wave.
