If the trail was worth it — tip the trail boss.

A great story for the woods. A hunter on a great elk hunt meets the Old Man. The trip turns desperate as the days go by.

Read an excerpt · from Chapter 1, “Optimism”

The wind cut like a skinning knife across the high ridge, carrying the bite of early winter down from the glaciers that clung to the northern peaks. Snow flurried in thin, dry sheets, hissing against the stunted spruce and disappearing into the duff before it could settle. Harlan Wade pulled his wool collar higher and kept walking, boots crunching through the frozen crust with the steady rhythm of a man who had done this for more years than most men lived.

He was sixty-eight, though the mountains had made him look older. His face was a map of creases burned deep by decades of sun and wind, the skin across his cheekbones stretched tight and weathered to the color of old saddle leather. A white scar ran from the corner of his left eye down into the grizzle of his beard—gift of a bull elk’s antler tine thirty autumns ago. His eyes, pale gray and unflinching, still held the sharp glint of a younger man, the kind that could spot a bedded elk at half a mile through timber thick as dog hair.
